Historians claim that chiropractic care dates back to the days of the Ancient Greeks and Chinese. Writings from the era discuss chiropractic techniques to ease body pains, and the Greek doctor Hippocrates extolled knowledge of the spine in many of his works as well.

Modern chiropractic care can be traced back to Daniel David Palmer, a native Canadian who made his home in the United States in the late 1800s. According to the story, he was working late in his office one night and struck up a conversation with the deaf janitor. The janitor talked about the circumstances surrounding his loss of hearing, claiming that he had heard something pop in his spine just before his deafness began. Palmer realized that the pop was connected to the man's condition. Feeling the man's back, he noted that one of his vertebrae was out of position. If it could be readjusted, he reasoned, it should restore the man's hearing. From there developed a series of hand treatments, which he later termed chiropractic care--from the Greek words "chiro" (hand) and "practic" (practice). He began accepting students to his health center in 1898, and the technique has flourished ever since.

While chiropractic care techniques have advanced considerably since Palmer's day, they still adhere to the same basic principles.
